Dinosaur Jr Frontman J Mascis Releases “J + Friends Sing + Chant for Amma”

at All Major Digital Retailers Via Baked Goods Records December 2

On December 2, 2008, “J + Friends Sing + Chant for Amma” will be released digitally for the first time at all major digital retailers on J Mascis’ own label, Baked Goods. The album is a collection of devotional songs dedicated to the living Indian Saint, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma).

Amma is a humanitarian and spiritual leader who has dedicated her life to uplifting suffering humanity through her embrace, which she offers to all regardless of caste, creed or religion. In the past 30 years she has hugged more than 24 million people throughout the world.

Amma has also started a vast range of humanitarian projects, including orphanages, charitable hospitals and free homes for the homeless. All the proceeds of Mascis’ CD go towards this cause. For information about Amma visit www.amma.org.

The CD finds Mascis both on electric and acoustic guitar, playing original devotional songs, including “Help Me, Amma,” “Amma What Now?,” “Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu,” “Please Remember That I’m Here” and “Take Me Home.”

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu” is a Sanskrit mantra meaning “May All the Beings in all the Worlds Be Happy.” The final song, “Ayi Giri Nandini,” is a metalized version of a Sanskrit hymn by Adi Shankaracharya. Written around 1300 years ago, the hymn sings the glories of the Divine Mother as she slaughters the demonic forces of Mahisha Asura, the Buffalo Demon. Mahisha Asura symbolizes the dark negativities of humanity: greed, anger, laziness, pride, etc.

“This self-released disc represents the most beautiful and nakedly emotional music J Mascis has ever created… it’s as powerful as anything ever wrought by Dinosaur Jr, with the crucial difference that it soothes the soul instead of warping the brain.” – Jason Ankeny, allmusic.com:
On Friday night at the Knitting Factory, this guitar mustered the college-radio guitar heroes Tom Verlaine (of Television), J Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr.), Nels Cline (of Wilco) and Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth) for a concert to celebrate its 50th anniversary. In their hands it was a guitar suited both to fine detail and blistering noise.”
But as you can see above, we’ve worked out things with a mighty healthy chunk of the weekend’s unbelievable roster.

The Jazzmaster Turns 50!

September concert in New York and new Fender web page celebrate one of the coolest guitars ever …

To celebrate the rich five-decade legacy of the ultra-cool Jazzmaster guitar, Fender is throwing an ultra-cool 50th Anniversary Jazzmaster Concert on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at New York’s famous Knitting Factory nightclub. The artist lineup that evening is as cool as the guitar itself, with performances from acclaimed Jazzmaster masters Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), Nels Cline (Wilco) and Tom Verlaine (Television), with special guests Norton Wisdom and Edison Glass. Additional special guests are always an exciting possibility, too.

The event will also feature Fender guitar displays and graphics, videos and a Jazzmaster guitar giveaway. And rather than being an invitation-only event, Fender’s 50th Anniversary Jazzmaster Concert is open to the public on a club-capacity basis.

New York’s Knitting Factory, located at 74 Leonard St., is the perfect venue for this auspicious musical occasion. The famous nightclub is a downtown music destination that gives just the right nod to the Jazzmaster guitar’s initial late-’50s jazz intentions; it also provided a welcoming home to the experimental scene of the ’70 and ’80s that spawned great Jazzmaster-wielding groups such as television and Sonic Youth.

Fender introduced the Jazzmaster in 1958 as a high-end alternative to its omnipresent 1950s elder siblings, the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars. Curvaceously sleek and boasting an abundance of controls and chrome, the Jazzmaster became an unexpected hit with youthful players who were blazing new trails in surf and garage pop music. Well more than a decade later, the Jazzmaster was rediscovered be new generations of edgy new guitarists who loved its great looks, versatile sound, affordable price and subversive cool. The guitar continued to attract those who dared to be different; the boundary pushers and the up-and-coming fringe talent.

Even a brief look at the instrument’s 50 years shows that whenever rock music experienced major stylistic shifts, the underdog Jazzmaster was always right there—be it surf, punk, new wave, goth, shoe-gaze, grunge, indie or any other subgenre in which the guitar was prized.
