On Friday, November 14th, at 7:30PM, local Pioneer Valley musicians will be hosting An Evening of Music in Memory of Melissa Rich Mulcahy, who died unexpectedly on September 13th. She was a dear friend to many musicians in the community and an avid supporter of their endeavors. The concert, to be held at the Northampton Center for the Arts in downtown Northampton, is an opportunity to celebrate her tremendous spirit and her love of music. All proceeds from the event will go directly to her family.

The concert will start off with special performances by such local favorites as: Winterpills, Lo Fine, The Fawns, Spouse, National Carpet, School for the Dead, Aloha Steamtrain, Spanish for Hitchhiking, Haunt, The Claudia Malibu, Sitting Next to Brian, Jason Bourgeois, Trallfazz, The Caroline Know, The Humming Field, Zeke Fiddler, Steve Westfield, The Drunk Stuntmen, and others. New Haven-based musicians, Mr. Ray, The Mountain Movers, and Jeff Greene (Butterflies of Love) will feature in the latter portion of the event, along with a special performance by renowned Dinosaur Jr. front-man, J Mascis.

There will be a number of items raffled off throughout the evening, including an electric guitar autographed by participating musicians, handmade crafts, gift certificates, and CDs. Additionally, the merchandise area will feature arts/craft items produced by friends of Melissa Rich Mulcahy, in addition to albums and t-shirts donated by the bands.

Advance tickets are available at Pleasant Street Video in Northampton, and the Apollo Grill in Easthampton (Eastworks Bldg.), as well as online at rubwrongways.com. Ticket price is a suggested donation of $20.

Called simply “J Mascis, Black Angels, Dandy Warhols,” the track, described by Dandys’ frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor as a “prog-rock school fight song,” is a dark, driving piece, anchored by Dandys’ drummer Brent DeBoer and the tom-heavy beat, and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, who forgoes his usual guitar for a high-fretted bass.

Vocals — provided by Zia McCabe, Brent, and Brian Coates — though sparse, are powerful and effective. The single syllables, the distant shouts, become part of the swirling landscape. Indeed, the music conveys both the individual contribution of the players and the integrity of the whole piece, a 5-minute long depiction of grunge-fueled psychedelia.

The sessions with J Mascis and the Black Angels, recorded on different days at the Dandy Warhols’ Odditorium, were filmed and compiled into an episode, which helps to trace and explain the progress of the first track, and is now playing on the Breathe Easy MySpace site.

100% of profits will go to the Three Rivers Land Conservancy, a non-profit organization that works to conserve and preserve land by the Clackamas, Tualatin, and lower Willamette Rivers against urbanization. Through the purchases of these songs, along with and corporate contributions, the initial goal is to save 10,000 acres of Oregon’s natural habitat. All songs will be available for purchase on the Breathe Easy MySpace site.

WFMU is pleased to announce that the station will be broadcasting and streaming live from the huge All Tomorrow’s Parties festival (curated by My Bloody Valentine) next weekend up at Kutsher’s Resort near Monticello, New York. As of now, WFMU will be live Saturday and Sunday (September 20/21) at the site, but our ability to be there Friday may change as well, stay tuned. On board: Yo La Tengo, Polvo, Dinosaur Jr, Growing, Harmonia, Om, Mercury Rev, Lightning Bolt, Bob Mould, Low, Wooden Shjips, Silver Mt. Zion, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spectrum, and more! Before MBV fans get too worked up, we should mention that our broadcast permissions have all been given subject to the bands’ approvals and some are still pending/in channels of communication. But as you can see above, we’ve worked out things with a mighty healthy chunk of the weekend’s unbelievable roster. We’re still hammering away on this and making preparations for a dual-stage broadcast; news may change day to day, so please stay tuned to our site and airwaves for listings of exact set times we’ll be able to carry. The festival, by the way, was rumored to be sold out, but as of today is not, so please check in with ATP for more info. If any WFMU listeners have tickets and would like to help out the station in some capacity during the weekend we’d love to hear from you.
